Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston are two of the world’s most beloved artists. If you don’t recognize their names, then you are certainly familiar with some of their masterworks: Pinocchio, Bambi, and The Jungle Book. Notes one animation historian in this captivating documentary, “I’ve never gone any place on this earth that [people] didn’t know or talk about specifically scenes that Frank and Ollie did.” Thomas and Johnston are the most prominent of Disney’s vaunted group of key animators known as the “Nine Old Men.” They have collaborated on books about Disney animation and in interviews are engaging storytellers. Their delightful and illuminating anecdotes spanning their 43-year tenure at Disney, as well as classic film clips, take viewers behind the scenes to see how some of the studio’s most beloved characters (such as Thumper and Mowgli) and most indelible scenes (Lady and the Tramp’s back-alley spaghetti dinner, Bambi on the ice) were created. Though they joke about being known as “the men who killed Bambi’s mother,” Thomas and Johnston are credited with changing not only the face, but the soul of animation. They pioneered what is called personality animation. According to Thomas, “Ollie had a sign above his desk: ‘What is the character thinking and why does he feel that way?’” But at the heart of Frank

Young dinosaur friends Little Foot, Cera, Spike, Ducky, and Petrie are content with their lives in the Great Valley, but things keep changing and sometimes the friends just feel like they don’t quite fit in. As Petrie struggles to perfect his flying for the very important Day of the Flyers, he realizes how different he is from his brothers and sisters and, while he and his friends value his uniqueness, it’s causing big problems in the family’s flight formations. Meanwhile, Cera is struggling with the arrival of a new baby sister and the resulting lack of attention from her father and Tria. When an odd creature named Guido shows up in the valley, Petrie befriends him and learns an important lesson about how to maintain his individuality while still contributing to his family’s collaborative flight. A courageous act by Guido saves Cera’s sister from peril, helping Cera realize how much she really cares about her new sister, and sparking a personal revelation that gives Guido a much better sense of his own place in the world. This is an entertaining animated show with a wholesome message about the importance of friendship, adaptability, and uniqueness. (Ages 3 to 7) –Tami Horiuchi

Baby Einstein – Baby Neptune – Discovering Water (2003)

There’s no denying a youngster’s attraction to water, and the folks at Baby Einstein tap into that natural interest–and broaden it. They take babies and toddlers from bathtime to the beach, from tap water to waterfalls and geysers. A puppet octopus and duck serve as guides through clearly labeled sections: Ocean, Rivers and Lakes; Rain Drops and Puddles; Water at My House. A child speaks the title at the beginning and end of each unit, but those are the only words in this 24-minute “video board book.” The rest of the sounds come courtesy of Handel, Telemann, Beethoven, and Johann Strauss. Both toy animals and real ones swim through the scenes and the footage of dolphins, sea turtles, and marina fish are fascinating enough that preschoolers won’t mind sitting in with younger siblings. (Ages 1-3) –Kimberly Heinrichs

The supernatural adventure Black Blood Brothers (2006) takes place in a world divided between Red Bloods (humans) and Black Bloods (vampires), both of whom are menaced by The Kowloon Children, a virulent clan of mutant vampires. Jiro “The Silver Blade” Mochizuki helped defeat the Children in a war in Hong Kong 10 years earlier. When he brings his younger brother Kotaro to the Special Zone, where vampires reside, violence erupts. The Mochizuki brothers are joined by Mimiko Katsuragi from the Order Coffin Corporation, which administers the Zone. Mimiko and Kotaro find themselves caught in the middle of a new battle that pits the surviving Kowloon Children against Jiro and the officers of the Corporation, some of whom are powerful sorcerers. The story grows more complicated with each episode, and many of the narrative threads are left dangling. But director Hiroaki Yoshikawa keeps the story moving at such a crisp pace, the unanswered questions fall by the wayside. Black Blood takes considerable liberties with traditional vampire legends: humans only become vampires if they drink vampire blood or are bitten by one of the Kowloon children; other vampire bites don’t hurt them. Jiro can survive exposure to daylight, although he finds it ennervating. The character of Mimiko provides comic relief and a potential love interest, which helps to leaven an otherwise dark story. Black Blood Brothers is lighter-hearted and more entertaining than such gory vampire tales as Hellsing and Trinity Blood. (Rated TV MA: violence, violence against women, alcohol and tobacco use, suggestive imagery) –Charles Solomon (1. Black Blood Brothers, 2. The Compromiser, 3. The Kowloon Bloodline, 4. Old Blood, 5. Appleseed (Widescreen) (2004)

The 2004 Appleseed feature is a reworking of the earlier video based on the manga by Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell). In 2131, most of humanity has withdrawn to the glittering city of Olympus after a devastating war. When the curvaceous Deunan Knute comes to Olympus, she encounters her former comrade Briareos, now a cyborg, and the lovely android Hitomi. The fate of Hitomi, Olympus, and humanity rest on the lost “Appleseed” technology that Deunan’s mother helped to develop. A standard series of chases, mecha battles, and confrontations leads to a predictable ending. When the original Appleseedappeared in 1988, it felt like a summary of anime’s past, while Akira pointed the way to the future. This new version feels like a mishmash of Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Jin-Roh, Evangelion, and other, more exciting works. The motion-capture CG is typically weightless, and the mecha look oddly squat. (Rated R: violence) –Charles Solomon
